City Council November 18, 2010 Regular Meeting Summary
New Orleans, LA - November 18, 2010 - Today, the New Orleans City Council honored members of local armed forces and received the annual report of the Mayor's Military Advisory Committee, which included updates from military leaders as part of the annual Military Appreciation Day.
The Council also passed Motions establishing the Regular Meeting schedule and holiday schedule for 2011.
Honored Local Armed Forces for Military Appreciation Day
The Mayor's Military Advisory Committee (MMAC) appeared before the Council to conduct the annual Military Appreciation Day activities. Major General David Mize (Ret.), Chairman of the MMAC, led the presentation, which included the Committee's annual report, performances by the United States Marine Corps Band and updates from military leaders of local armed forces organizations.
Leaders from military organizations, including the U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Marine Forces Reserve, U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, Louisiana National Guard, including the Air National Guard, and the U.S. Navy, presented the Council with an update on the activities of their respective organizations, including involvement in community events and foreign disaster relief services.
Representative groups of active military members from each service were also in attendance for Military Appreciation Day.
Councilmembers thanked all of the armed forces representatives present in the Chamber and commended them for their service and dedication to New Orleans and the country.
Council Vice President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson said, "We are so grateful to all our service members for being here today and for all that they do for our City and our country - there aren't enough words to express our gratitude. You all have been a constant presence and have had a profound impact here in New Orleans. The military has such a significant and meaningful history in this City and we must honor that."
Council President Arnie Fielkow said, "We want to thank the Mayor's Military Advisory Committee for their very comprehensive report and express our appreciation to all of our active service members. The impact of your military service, as well as your volunteer work, is felt throughout the City. We owe you a special debt of gratitude for the many contributions you have made and continue to make to New Orleans and our country."
Established 2011 Regular Meeting and Holiday Schedules
The Council passed Motions M-10-495 and M-10-496 establishing the 2011 Regular City Council Meeting schedule and the 2011 City Government holiday schedule.
Motion M-10-495, co-authored by Councilmembers Fielkow and Clarkson, establishes the Regular City Council Meeting schedule for 2011. Beginning February 3, every fourth Regular Council Meeting will begin at 3 p.m. as part of a program designed to increase community engagement. To view the 2011 Regular Meeting Schedule, click here.
