City Council May 19, 2011 Regular Meeting Summary

New Orleans, LA - May 19, 2011 - Today, the Council, by motion, amended its Rules and Regulations to streamline for clarity and efficiency City Council procedures and processes. 

 

The Council by resolution designated the organizations to be awarded funding under the City Council-Harrah's New Orleans annual community grants program.

 

Former Tuskegee, Alabama Mayor and founder of the World Council of Mayors Johnny Ford with representatives of HealthHIV appeared before the Council to discuss a national HIV project.

New Orleans, LA - May 19, 2011 - Today, the Council, by motion, amended its Rules and Regulations to streamline for clarity and efficiency City Council procedures and processes. 

 

The Council by resolution designated the organizations to be awarded funding under the City Council-Harrah's New Orleans annual community grants program.

 

Former Tuskegee, Alabama Mayor and founder of the World Council of Mayors Johnny Ford with representatives of HealthHIV appeared before the Council to discuss a national HIV project.

Revised Council Rules

The Council passed Motion M-11-160, authored by Councilmembers Fielkow, Clarkson, Guidry, Head, Gisleson Palmer, Hedge-Morrell and Johnson, revising the Rules and Regulations of the Council and adopting amendments governing its procedural rules, the organization of committees and the transaction of Council business.

 

The amendments adopted clarified the time frame for submission of nominations and questionnaires for appointments made by the full Council; changed the name of the Sanitation and Environmental Enforcement Committee to the Sanitation and Environmental Committee; revised public speaking time requirements at City Council Meetings. 

 

Council Chief of Staff Evelyn Pugh said, "These revisions to the Council Rules are intended to improve the administrative and legislative processes of the Council. Ultimately, our goal is always to better serve the public interest."

Received Presentation on National HIV Prevention Campaign

In his capacity as a member of the World Council of Mayors, seven-term former Mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama Johnny Ford appeared before the Council. The World Council of Mayors is partnering with the national organization HealthHIV in a prevention and awareness campaign to launch in June. The group specifically suggested the Council's support given that Baton Rouge and New Orleans have among the largest populations of people living with HIV/AIDS. Baton Rouge ranks second and New Orleans ranks ninth. Representatives from HealthHIV discussed and presented information about the national epidemic of HIV infections among minorities.     

 

HealthHIV, headquartered in Washington D.C., advances effective prevention, care and support for people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS by providing education, technical assistance and health services research to organizations, communities and professionals.

Designated City Council-Harrah's Community Grant Awards

The Council passed Resolution R-11-220, co-authored by Councilmembers Clarkson, Fielkow, Guidry, Head, Gisleson Palmer, Hedge-Morrell and Johnson, designating the organizations to be awarded funding under the City Council-Harrah's New Orleans annual community grants program. 

 

The grant program provides $225,000 annually to deserving non-profits. Its purpose is to foster organizations and projects that contribute to the economic, cultural and civic fabric of the city.
