Councilmember Brossett to Address Sanitation Charges and Minimum Wage at Tomorrow's Joint Budget & Public Works Committee Meeting

NEW ORLEANS - District "D" Councilmember Jared C. Brossett is holding a special joint Budget and Public Works, Sanitation and Environment Committee Meeting on Thursday, July 8, at 1 PM to consider a one-time suspension of residential sanitation charges and institute a $15 minimum wage for all City employees.

 

Ordinance 33,393 mandates a one-time suspension of monthly sanitation charges for August 2021 to provide residents with a measure of financial relief from inconsistent sanitation pickups citywide. Councilmember Brossett has requested representatives from the Chief Administrative Office, the City’s Law Department, the Department of Sanitation, and other interested parties to participate in the meeting.

Council Unanimously Approves Higher Pay for City Workers with Passage of Living Wage Ordinance

NEW ORLEANS - At today's regular meeting, the City Council unanimously passed an amendment to the Living Wage Ordinance, bringing the minimum wage for City Contract workers to $15 per hour by 2023. The increase will be phased in over two years, requiring $13.25 on January 1, 2022, and the full $15 starting January 1, 2023. 

 

Councilmember Jared C. Brossett passed the first-ever Living Wage ordinance in 2015 to ensure that taxpayer dollars extended by the City to private contractors are used in a manner that creates jobs and keeps contracted and subcontracted workers and their families out of poverty.

Council Budget Committee to Review Pandemic Impact on Local Industries and Businesses at Tomorrow's Meeting

NEW ORLEANS - The City Council’s Budget Committee will review sales tax receipts from various industries to display the pandemic's major impact on local businesses on Wednesday, March 17, at 10:30 AM. The report to be presented at Tuesday’s meeting was requested by Budget Chair Jared Brossett and Council President Helena Moreno. This meeting is part of the ongoing efforts of the full Council and Mayor’s team working toward recovery.

NEW ORLEANS - Councilmember Jared C. Brossett and colleagues will receive a comprehensive update on the COVID-19 pandemic during the next City Council Emergency Preparedness and Cybersecurity Special Committee meeting on March 2 at 1 PM.

Col. Terry Ebbert, USMC Ret., Director of Public Safety and Homeland Security, and the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security will share information about how the City addresses special events during COVID-19. Additionally, he will discuss plans for a citywide mass vaccination program and provide any other relevant information related to the City’s COVID-19 response.
