NEW ORLEANS - Today, five New Orleans Mayors - LaToya Cantrell, Mitch Landrieu, Marc Morial, Sidney Barthelemy and Moon Landrieu - published a powerful op-ed supporting the initiative by Councilmembers Helena Moreno and Jason Williams to rename the current Jefferson Davis Parkway for Dr. Norman C. Francis.

Councilmembers Moreno and Williams Announce Beginning of Renaming Process for Jefferson Davis Parkway

NEW ORLEANS - Today, Councilmembers Moreno and Williams announced they would jointly author a motion to begin the process of renaming Jefferson Davis Parkway at the June 18th City Council Meeting. Jefferson Davis Parkway, a main artery that travels across several core New Orleans neighborhoods, is named after the former President of the Confederate States of America.

Council President Jason Williams and Vice President Helena Moreno Urge Legislature to Restore CARES Act Funding Intended for Local Governments

NEW ORLEANS Due to a recent amendment on SB 189 on the House floor this week, the City of New Orleans could lose at least $50M of funding from the CARES Act. This means SB 189, which has now passed the House and Senate in its current form would:

  • Redirect $300 million of the State's $811M of CARES Act funding intended for local governments to businesses;
  • Shorten the time period for eligible expenses (Congress intended to cover local governments through December but the Louisiana Legislature is shortening to September); and
  • Expand bureaucracy by mandating the Legislator Auditor play additional role of expenditure review.

Council Advocates for Hazard Pay for Essential Frontline Workers During COVID-19

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City Council unanimously passed Resolution R-20-136 authored by Councilmember Williams calling for the provision of hazard pay for frontline workers in the next federal coronavirus stimulus package. New Orleans relies heavily on essential workers, such as first responders, health care professionals, transit operators, grocery store clerks, sanitation workers, childcare providers, and more, to keep the city functioning.

 Council President Jason Williams Seeks to Convene Meeting Between Metro Service Group and Sanitation Workers

NEW ORLEANS - A group of sanitation workers went on strike May 5th, forming picket lines outside the New Orleans East headquarters of waste disposal company Metro Service Group. The workers are requesting increased pay, equipment, and other protections amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Councilmembers expressed concern at the May 7th Council meeting and offered assistance in ensuring workers had daily access to PPE, or personal protective equipment, including masks and gloves.
