Council Advances Plan to Fundamentally Reshape Sewerage & Water Board Power Supply by Building Long-Sought Direct Linkage with Power Utility

NEW ORLEANS - Today, Council Public Works Chair Joe Giarrusso and Utilities Chair Helena Moreno announced the advancement of a plan to build a permanent new power supply for the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) by constructing a $75 million linkage with Entergy New Orleans. The plan, funded directly by the SWBNO, State Capital Outlay dollars, and bond funding, presents a fundamental shift in the way SWBNO powers its drainage and water systems while fixing the generational problem of power reliability from SWBNO aging turbines.

City Council Responds to Recent Comments by Representative Raymond E. Garofalo, Jr. on the “Good” of Slavery

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans City Council has sent a letter to Representative Raymond E. Garofalo, Jr. on behalf of all seven members responding to recent comments referencing the “good” of slavery. As stated in the letter, the Council refers to Representative Garofalo's statement, saying, "suggesting there was some 'good' within the immoral evil of slavery as practiced in this country is reprehensible. There is no equivocation or relativism possible within the dark history of this institution. Any attempts to excuse these realities is not only wrong but unforgivable."

NEW ORLEANS - The City Council is currently accepting applications for a highly qualified, responsible and professional individual to fill the unclassified position of Council Fiscal Officer. This individual will assist the Council in its role as the budgeting authority of municipal government in Orleans Parish, and will work closely with the central staff, Council Budget Chair and Budget Committee members and staff, as well as Executive Branch budget and financial officials.

Donna Glapion Sworn in as New At-Large City Councilmember

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City Council held a private swearing-in ceremony to officially welcome Councilmember-At-Large Division 2 appointee Donna Glapion following her confirmation during Thursday's regular meeting. Councilmember Glapion will assume her duties immediately and will serve through the remainder of former Councilmember and newly-elected District Attorney Jason Williams' term.
