Council Approves Rezoning of Two Blighted Properties to Spur New Development in Algiers

NEW ORLEANS - Today, District "C" Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer introduced zoning changes to encourage development on two large blighted properties in Algiers. The Council approved motions initiating rezoning the former Touro-Shakespeare Home and Hendee incinerator sites. Both City-owned properties have been vacant for several years, and Councilmember Palmer is hoping the new zoning will put them back into commerce.

NEW ORLEANS - District "C" Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer has issued the following statement regarding the recent act of violence on Bourbon Street:

"My heart goes out to the victim who was shot at a daiquiri bar where she worked. The recent violence on Bourbon Street is unacceptable, as it would be in any neighborhood in New Orleans. We have to allow law enforcement the time and space to thoroughly investigate and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer Proposes Modified Plan for Bywater HANO Development

NEW ORLEANS - District "C" Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer will ask the Council to support a modified plan for the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) proposed mixed-income development at 4100 Royal Street. HANO requested to rezone the entire site to HM-MU for a five-story, 150 unit affordable housing development.  HANO's developer, ITEX group, has since reduced the unit number to 136; however, the HM-MU zoning would allow for up to 184 units.

NEW ORLEANS - At today's Special City Council meeting, Councilmembers approved changes spearheaded by Councilmember Palmer to the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance related to the City's Short Term Rental (STR) program. Zoning Docket 26/19 establishes two categories of STR permits: Residential and Commercial.
