Impact of New Property Assessments to be Heard by Council Committee

NEW ORLEANS - Due to the outcry over recent property tax assessments, the Ad Valorem and Dedicated Revenue Committee will hear a presentation on the impacted areas and possible mitigation options. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 26 at 10 a.m. in Council Chamber at City Hall.

"This committee is tasked with reviewing revenues flowing into entities within New Orleans. Many citizens who we've talked to are incredibly distraught and concerned over their latest assessments. They are searching for answers and need help," said Council President and Committee Chair Helena Moreno.

Representatives of Together New Orleans (TNO) will share a presentation with data analysis of impacted areas and other relevant issues.

"First, because the assessment increases will have a very serious impact on thousands of New Orleans families. TNO conducted this analysis because we need to know what that impact is likely to be and how many people will be affected. Second, it is of the utmost importance that the assessment process has been conducted in a way that is fair, accurate and impartial. Our analysis has found, unfortunately, that the provisional assessment rolls fall far short of this standard," Together New Orleans said in a statement.

"If the assessor is going to dot every "i" and cross every "t" when it comes to valuing the property of ordinary families, then we need to make very sure the same rigor is applied to the evaluations of high-value and industrial property," said Rev. Joe Connelly, a leader with TNO.

Together New Orleans is a broad-based coalition of congregations and community-based organizations in the greater New Orleans area, with the capacity to address community problems large and small.

The rules will be suspended to add this presentation to the top of Monday's meeting agenda.
