Special Ad Valorem & Dedicated Revenue Committee to Hear Testimony on Expiring Millages, Convention Center and Assessor Surpluses, and State Gambling Revenues

NEW ORLEANS - Today, Council President Helena Moreno announced her priorities for the Special Ad Valorem and Dedicated Revenue Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, Aug. 26. The Committee will focus on illuminating additional sources of revenue - including expiring millages - and the roles they may play in sustaining and enhancing services. President Moreno has called upon the Administration, the Public Library, the Convention Center, and the State Legislative Fiscal Office to attend to discuss lesser-known and understood revenue sources such as expiring millages, state gambling revenue, and surpluses in associated state-agencies.

"Our people deserve our diligence on this issue, especially in light of rapidly increasing tax burdens that further threaten affordability in our city. People need relief, and we are determined to explore every avenue to align existing revenues with our most urgent priorities," said Council President Moreno.

Last month, the Special Committee reviewed the core set of millages and revenue sources - as well as the gaping capital needs - of primary City services. The Committee heard presentations on macro city financing, capital and infrastructure funding challenges, and new revenue measures from the "Fair Share" initiative. The Committee will continue to review the revenue picture in New Orleans to produce an instructive look on any broad changes or realignments needed to meet citizen priorities for this government. The Committee will compile and release that report by early 2020.

The upcoming committee meeting will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. in City Council Chambers. More information can be found here.
