August 18, 2021
Jay H. Banks
NEW ORLEANS - District “B” Councilmember Jay H. Banks, co-author of Ordinance 33,422 regarding the implementation of medical quiet zones, has announced he will be deferring action on the legislation to a future Council meeting.
Councilmember Banks issued the following statement in response to the decision to defer:
"Ordinance Calendar Number 33,422 has been deferred and will not be voted on by the New Orleans City Council without amendments and further public input.
I want to be clear that the intent of the ordinance is to provide medical quiet zones, creating a safe area around medical facilities for the health and welfare of the patients and those caring for them.
The language of the ordinance has raised questions and concerns, which is understandable considering the context. I want to ensure clarity while we continue to address this issue. While the ordinance is deferred, my office will work closely with experts and community members to review and make any necessary changes to enhance the intent of the ordinance and prevent any unintended outcomes."
