The resolutions brought to the Council called on the Governor to reinstate Pandemic Enhanced Unemployment Benefits and on President Biden to take swift action to cancel student loan debt.
NEW ORLEANS - District "D" Councilmember Jared C. Brossett received unanimous support from his colleagues and members of the public on resolutions that improve economic conditions amidst the pandemic, which have become direr due to the surge of the Delta variant.
Resolution R-21-316 called on the Biden Administration to create a plan to cancel all student debt, or at least absolve $50,000 per borrower, by the end of his first year in office. Resolution R-21-317 called on Governor John Bel Edwards to reinstate enhanced unemployment benefits that allow Louisianians to put food on the table and pay rent amidst the public health crisis. Both passed unanimously.
“I’m thrilled that these resolutions received such widespread support," said Councilmember Brossett. "I want to thank Step Up, the organization I have been working with to get these resolutions passed, and particularly LaTanya Howard and Gabriel Shaw, who came in person to share their stories. They showed us that the revocation of federal pandemic unemployment benefits can be absolutely devastating. It was my honor to carry these resolutions, and I will continue to do everything in my power to stand up for workers in our state.”
