Utilities Chair Helena Moreno to Order Independent Investigation After Entergy Reveals 3x as Many Customers Shut-Off in Mardi Gras Evening Blackout as Necessary

NEW ORLEANS - Today, during a hearing of the Joint Utilities and Public Works Committees, Entergy New Orleans revealed that more than 25,000 customers were shut off during the MISO ordered blackout last Tuesday night, totaling nearly 81MW of load, when only 26MW was required.

“New Orleanians must have answers as to why more than three times as many customers were shut off than necessary on a historically cold night,” said Council President Moreno. “This news shocked my colleagues and me, which is why I immediately ordered an independent investigation of Entergy New Orleans’ actions that night by our in-house regulatory office and advisors. New Orleanians shouldered an unnecessary amount of sacrifice on that cold night, and we need to know why so it never happens again.”

The full Council will consider a formal resolution stating the scope of the investigation Thursday. The resolution will direct the regulatory staff and advisors to conduct the investigation and report findings to the Council and the public. Watch live coverage at council.nola.gov.
