Councilmember Lesli Harris to Announce New Greenspace in Central City Named After Barbara Lacen-Keller

NEW ORLEANS - District 'B' Councilmember and Quality of Life Committee Chair Lesli Harris will announce a new greenspace project in Central City during the upcoming committee meeting on Monday, February 24. The new park will be dedicated to the late Barbara Lacen-Keller, a beloved community leader affectionately known as the "Mayor of Central City."

The initiative stems from a site visit to the Keller Community Center, where Councilmember Harris’s office identified an underutilized city-owned lot with the potential to become a park. Funds have been allocated in the city’s budget to support the transformation of this space into a vibrant community greenspace.

Barbara Lacen-Keller’s family and friends will be in attendance to honor her legacy. Councilmember Harris will be submitting a motion to initiate the process through the City Planning Commission, where a separate public meeting will be held for the renaming consideration. While the official name of the park will be determined after further consultation with the family and city officials, this meeting marks a major milestone in making this vision a reality.

This meeting is open to members of the public and media. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the City’s plans to enhance green infrastructure and community spaces.
