NEW ORLEANS, LA — The Governmental Affairs Committee convened to conduct a hearing to consider the appointment of Steven Nelson as the Director of the Department of Public Works.
Before the hearing, the Committee held an executive session to discuss the Lashawn Jones, et al. v. Marlin Gusman, et al., litigation. This lawsuit alleged unsafe conditions at the Orleans Parish Prison, including violence, sexual assaults, inadequate mental health care, poor medical access, sanitation issues, fire safety concerns, and a lack of Spanish-language services.
Committee Holds Hearing for DPW Director Appointment
Stephen Nelson testified before the Committee to support his confirmation as Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW). Nelson discussed key initiatives he and the DPW team plan to focus on and improve, including the “Light’s On” Initiative, citywide street maintenance, and infrastructure coordination with the City Council. During his presentation, Nelson explained his plans to revamp and streamline these city initiatives. Click here to view the full presentation.
After the presentation, the Committee voted to recommend Nelson’s appointment to the full Council.
