City Council President Helena Moreno Announces Opening of Applications to Serve as Interim Councilmember

City Council President Helena Moreno Announces Opening of Applications to Serve as Interim Councilmember

NEW ORLEANS - Council President Helena Moreno has now received official notice of vacancy from Council Vice President Jason Williams effective today, January 11, 2021, at 11 AM.

The City Council will now accept applications from members of the public interested in serving as an interim Councilmember to fill the remainder of the term of former Councilmember At-Large Jason Williams, who is now sworn in as the City’s new District Attorney (view his official letter of resignation here).

Qualified New Orleanians interested in taking on this role may visit council.nola.gov/interim to apply and submit a resume. As a reminder, anyone who serves as interim Councilmember At-Large may not run for that position in the Fall 2021 elections.

“I’m excited to take this step to open this opportunity for public service and engage the broader public in a process to select an interim Councilmember At-Large. This is an important position, and our City is best served if we look at the widest possible pool of potential candidates in order to find someone who can fairly and effectively represent the interests of all of our people,” said Council President Moreno.

The process for filling a vacancy on the Council is as follows:

  • Filling the vacancy must be at a regularly scheduled council meeting by a majority vote of the Council.
  • The Council has 30 days from the vacancy to fill the appointment, or the Mayor shall appoint a citizen.
  • Any person filling the vacancy cannot qualify as a candidate for that office in the Fall 2021 Council election.

The Charter requires that all Councilmembers (elected or interim) satisfy the following qualifications:

  • Be a citizen of the United States;
  • Currently be a qualified elector of and domiciled in the City of New Orleans;
  • For at-large members, the candidate must have been domiciled in the City for the past two years; and
  • The candidate does not hold any other public office or position (except for some named exceptions, such as notary public).

The application process will remain open until January 20, 2021, at 5 PM. For more information or to apply, please please visit council.nola.gov/interim.
