NEW ORLEANS, LA — Councilmember Jason Hughes joined Mayor Moreno and fellow city leaders in New Orleans East yesterday to highlight the importance of the "Lights On" Initiative, a citywide effort focused on improving street lighting to enhance public safety, visibility, and quality of life for residents.

The initiative prioritizes restoring and upgrading streetlights in neighborhoods, with a particular focus on New Orleans East. Reliable lighting plays a critical role in crime prevention, pedestrian safety, and overall community well-being.

"It's a new day in District E," said Councilmember Jason Hughes. "What you're going to see over the next four years is action—citizen-driven with partners who are committed to executing on behalf of this community."

City leaders outlined ongoing and upcoming work under the initiative, including inspections, repairs, and replacements of streetlights, as well as improved response times for reported outages. Residents are encouraged to continue reporting outages to help crews prioritize areas with the greatest need.

"We recognize this is a public safety issue, and we're taking the first of many steps to address crime in New Orleans East," said Mayor Helena Moreno. "New Orleans East has been ignored for way too long. Not anymore!" Mayor Moreno shared.

The "Lights On" Initiative is part of a broader effort to invest in neighborhood infrastructure and improve public safety outcomes across New Orleans, with New Orleans East serving as a key focus area.
