NEW ORLEANS, LA — Councilmember Freddie King joined Mayor Helena Moreno today to highlight a major milestone in the City of New Orleans’ ongoing infrastructure improvement efforts with the completion of the Department of Public Works’ first in-house concrete pour since Hurricane Katrina, located in District C.
The project marks a significant step forward in the City’s efforts to accelerate street repairs, reduce costs, and improve coordination by completing critical infrastructure work using City staff and resources rather than outside contractors. By performing concrete pours in-house, DPW is able to streamline timelines, respond more quickly to neighborhood needs, and maximize taxpayer dollars while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
The work was completed this week along a sidewalk in the 1800 block of Governor Nicholls Street, eliminating a long-standing safety hazard that has impacted neighbors since at least 2021. This project demonstrates the type of work that will increasingly be handled in-house over time, ultimately generating cost savings, as contractor-based repairs are significantly more expensive.
“I promised to enhance routine street maintenance and also provide Super Bowl-level coordination for infrastructure repairs," said Mayor Helena Moreno. "I’m getting started now on these efforts because we’ve waited long enough for better streets. The transformation of our streets won’t happen overnight, but today we begin to strategically chip away at this pervasive problem by busting up our cars all over town.”
Councilmember King has made improving basic infrastructure a priority for the district, working closely with DPW and the administration to identify problem areas and deliver timely, visible repairs that directly respond to community concerns.
“I’m very proud to have the first in-house concrete pour done by DPW right here in District C,” said Councilmember Freddie King. “Hats off to Mayor Moreno for bringing together leaders with deep experience in coordination and street services. By working together—with the administration and with residents—I believe we will deliver street repairs faster and more cost-effectively than ever before, and I’m proud to be a part of that effort,” King continued.
