July 21, 2021

NEW ORLEANS - District "B" Councilmember Jay H. Banks has issued the following statement in response to today’s proceedings at the Louisiana State Capitol:
"During today’s veto session at the Louisiana State Capitol, the House failed to overturn Governor John Bel Edwards’ veto of the discriminatory legislation, proposing to ban transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
I would like to thank Governor John Bel Edwards and every member of the State Legislature who stood with the LGBTQ+ community by upholding the veto. The message is clear, discrimination in any form will not be tolerated, period. Trans rights are human rights, and they must be respected.
Together, we must continue the fight for the civil rights of every person, no matter their race, creed, religion, or gender. Today’s decision is a step in the right direction, but there is more work that needs to be done. New Orleans will always be a welcoming and accepting city to everyone, and I promise to do everything in my power to continue the advancement of the rights of trans individuals."
