Councilmember Brossett to Address Sanitation Charges and Minimum Wage at Tomorrow's Joint Budget & Public Works Committee Meeting

NEW ORLEANS - District "D" Councilmember Jared C. Brossett is holding a special joint Budget and Public Works, Sanitation and Environment Committee Meeting on Thursday, July 8, at 1 PM to consider a one-time suspension of residential sanitation charges and institute a $15 minimum wage for all City employees.

Ordinance 33,393 mandates a one-time suspension of monthly sanitation charges for August 2021 to provide residents with a measure of financial relief from inconsistent sanitation pickups citywide. Councilmember Brossett has requested representatives from the Chief Administrative Office, the City’s Law Department, the Department of Sanitation, and other interested parties to participate in the meeting.

"Inconsistent trash and recycling pickups have a detrimental impact on the quality of life of our citizens," said Councilmember Brossett. "The regular collection of solid waste and recyclable material plays a vital role in public health as well as the cleanliness of our community."

The second piece of legislation that will be discussed during tomorrow's joint meeting is Ordinance 33,388 regarding a $15 minimum wage for all city employees.

Utilizing the powers granted to the City Council in the Home Rule Charter to impose requirements upon the Department of City Civil Service by ordinance, Councilmember Brossett’s legislation requires the Department of City Civil Service to conduct a pay study and provide recommendations to the Civil Service Commission and the Council relative to amending the Classified Pay Plan to establish a minimum wage of $15 per hour for all classified employees for the City of New Orleans.

Councilmember Brossett has invited representatives of Step Up! Louisiana to the meeting to speak to the organization's advocacy work on behalf of City employees and discuss how the new living wage of $15 per hour would positively impact the quality of life of all City workers and their families. Step Up! Louisiana is also expected to address the recent strike of city workers over working conditions.

Tomorrow's Budget and Public Works, Sanitation and Environment Committee Meeting will take place in the City Council Chamber. View the full meeting agenda here.
