NEW ORLEANS - Transportation Chair, Councilmember Palmer, is launching Transit Tuesdays, an initiative to hear from riders about their experiences using public transportation in New Orleans. Councilmember Palmer will ride an RTA bus from her home in Algiers Point to City Hall on Tuesday, June 18th during rush hour traffic. Additional routes will include riding the Algiers Ferry and utilizing RTA bus routes from Carrollton and New Orleans East to City Hall. Councilmember Palmer believes relying only on public transportation to get to work will provide her with first-hand experience of travel wait times and challenges of using the City's transit system.
"As the RTA undergoes a change in its management structure and the RPC does its comprehensive operations analysis, I think it is incredibly important for policymakers not to forget the voices of riders who rely on public transportation every day to get to school, to work or around town. That's why over the next few months, I'm joining them and riding the bus and the ferry more frequently to hear their experiences. I'm going to hear from one group of experts, but I want to make sure that I also hear from the real experts, on the ground, who rely on our public transit system. In order to make improvements and build a world-class system, we have to listen to the needs of passengers who use public transportation on a daily basis," said Councilmember Palmer.
"We welcome Councilmember Palmer to ride the RTA and better understand the challenges our riders and our system face, day in and day out," said Flozell Daniels, Jr., the RTA's Board Chairman. "The RTA is committed to improving transit in the New Orleans area and Kenner. We believe the more our community leaders understand transit and the obstacles that abound, the better we can work together to provide the top-notch service our citizens deserve."
Councilmember Palmer encourages public transit riders to use #TransitTuesdays to share their experience using public transportation on social media. She will repost some of those stories on her own social media accounts.
