City Council Passes Ordinance to Strengthen Building Safety and Expand Hiring for City Inspectors

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the New Orleans City Council passed an ordinance amending Section 2-975 of the City Code to exempt City inspectors from the City’s domicile requirement. This change will improve the enforcement of building codes and life safety standards by expanding the pool of qualified applicants for inspector positions.

“This ordinance is about putting public safety first and making sure we have professionals on the job to keep our city safe and thriving,” said Councilmember King, who authored the measure. “By removing the domicile requirement, we are strengthening our ability to enforce building codes efficiently and improving the quality of life for all residents.”

The ordinance includes a two-year implementation period, allowing the City to assess its impact on hiring and enforcement before determining next steps.
