Council Vice President Moreno Alerts Public of In-Person SNAP Application Assistance from Louisiana DCFS

NEW ORLEANS — Councilmember Helena Moreno is alerting the public of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance opportunities with the Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) here in New Orleans.

The department has partnered with Ochsner Health, Goodwill Industries and the New Orleans Public Library to provide in-person support for completing SNAP applications, addressing account issues and answering any questions about available resources. Residents will also be able to receive additional help applying for the Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP) and the Kinship Care Subsidy Program (KCSP).

“I wanted to ensure the public was aware that DCFS has partnered with Ochsner, Goodwill and our public libraries to bring direct assistance to New Orleanians and their families looking to receive SNAP, FITAP and KCSP benefits,” said Councilmember Moreno. “New Orleans faces a pressing food security crisis, with 62,320 residents or 16.4 percent of Orleans Parish experiencing food insecurity, a challenge that is particularly prevalent among our senior population. We know that food insecurity increases the risk of adverse health outcomes, impacts mental health, is linked to higher healthcare costs, and can negatively impact school and workplace productivity. It is critical that residents are aware of these programs that provide direct support to low-income households to buy nutritious food and alleviate hunger.”
