Councilmember Lesli Harris Responds to Reports of Increased ICE Activity in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Councilmember Lesli Harris issued a statement today in response to reports of increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in New Orleans, calling on federal partners to respect the civil nature of immigration matters and reaffirming the city’s commitment to protecting immigrant families.

“Our city is strongest when every resident feels safe, respected, and supported,” said Councilmember Harris. “As ICE activity increases, it is important to remind the federal government, and ICE directly, that immigration violations are civil matters, not criminal offenses. No one should be treated like a criminal for seeking safety, opportunity, or a better life.”

Councilmember Harris emphasized that immigrant families are vital members of New Orleans’ cultural, economic, and social fabric.

“Immigrant residents are workers, business owners, parents, students, caregivers, and neighbors. They deserve dignity, not fear or intimidation,” Harris continued.

In response to growing community concern, Councilmember Harris stated that the City Council is investigating the situation to understand the scope of ICE’s actions and assess potential impacts on residents. Councilmembers are also exploring what local policies and protections may be available to support immigrant families during this time.

“We are reviewing what steps the city can take to protect residents, ensure accurate information, and reinforce that New Orleans is a welcoming city for all who call it home,” said Harris. “We stand with immigrant families, and we will continue working to safeguard their rights and their safety.”

For residents seeking information or assistance, Councilmember Harris encourages reaching out to trusted community organizations such as ACLU Louisiana, Step Up Louisiana, VOTE, and Nuestra Voz, as well as legal service providers such as ISLA (Immigration Services & Legal Advocacy), Immigration Rights Law Group, and Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy.
