Media Advisory: Agenda Highlights for Regular Council Meeting on October 18, 2018

What: Among the items to be heard at tomorrow's regular meeting of the City Council:

  • The Council will hold its 5th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month order of business to recognize local experts, support agencies and survivors. 
  • The Council will consider a "Ban the Box" ordinance to extend fair hiring standards by limiting consideration of criminal history for applicants seeking City employment.
  • The Council will consider an ordinance relative to blighted pools to clarify the risks they pose to the health, safety and welfare of residents and permit the City to take necessary action to enter properties to remediate the dangerous conditions.
  • The Council will consider adopting a resolution calling a special election to authorize a new annual ad valorem tax to support services and programs for senior citizens.
  • The Council will consider an ordinance to create voluntary registration parameters for bicycles to facilitate recovery in the event of loss.
  • Additionally, The Council will consider a motion directing the City Planning Commission (CPC) to hold a public hearing on a conditional use to permit a hotel at 501 Elysian Fields Avenue and 548 Marigny Street.
  • The Council will consider approving a new appointee to the Civil Service Commission.
  • The Council will also receive special presentations from the YMCA Children's Unified Benefits and Services (Y CUBS) and the Mary Amelia Douglas-Whited Community Women's Health Education Center.
  • Please note: The Council will be receiving the CPC's Short Term Rental Study in accordance with Motion M-18-194, but will NOT be taking action on this matter at tomorrow's meeting. To view the study in its entirety, click here.
