NEW ORLEANS, LA — Councilmember Eugene Green issued a statement today on the pending end of the consent decree in New Orleans. "Today marks an important milestone for the City of New Orleans and the dedicated men and women of the New Orleans Police Department," New Orleans District D City Councilman Eugene Green said. "The lifting of the consent decree reflects more than a decade of hard work, reform, and commitment to building a department that protects and serves all residents with fairness, dignity, and respect. The NOPD has become a national example of constitutional policing. One that balances enforcement with accountability, transparency, and community engagement."
U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan, who has overseen reforms to the New Orleans Police Department for more than 12 years under a consent decree, said Thursday that she would agree to end the agreement at the request of the city and the Trump administration.
The order from U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan does not immediately terminate the decree, but it starts the ball rolling towards an early end to the two-year period that she approved in January as way for the measure to end. Lawyers with the Department of Justice have said that the government no longer opposes termination of the NOPD consent decree.
"Through sustained leadership and training, our officers have proven that constitutional policing and effective crime reduction are not opposing goals, but complementary pillars of modern law enforcement," Councilman Green said. "This progress did not happen overnight. It is the result of years of consistent effort, internal reform, and partnership with community stakeholders and federal monitors to embed these principles into everyday practice. I commend our police leadership and rank-and-file officers who embraced the challenge and made these changes lasting. It is time — and it is right — for this next chapter to begin. Local leadership, guided by community trust and continued Council oversight, will ensure that the values of constitutional policing remain at the heart of NOPD’s mission.”
