NEW ORLEANS, LA - On Thursday, September 18, 2025, the Quality of Life Committee met to discuss Motion No. M-25-468. This motion directs and requests the Health Department to design and implement a New Orleans Healthy Workplace Program.
Committee Recommends New Orleans Healthy Workplace Program for Approval
Representatives of Step Up Louisiana, a grassroots organization that aims to promote equity and justice in schools and workplaces throughout Louisiana, spoke before the Committee to support Motion M-25-468. This motion directs the Health Department to design and implement a New Orleans Healthy Workplace Program once funds are allocated. The program would establish workplace standards to protect employee health, create a voluntary “Healthy Workplace” certification for qualifying employers, and provide employers with technical assistance and educational resources to improve workplace policies and best practices.
This effort follows the passage of the Workers' Bill of Rights in 2024 and reflects community priorities for safe, supportive, and healthy work environments that enhance overall health outcomes. If this motion receives approval from the Council, the Health Department must also report budget needs to the Council to support the program.
After receiving Step Up Louisiana’s presentation and hearing public comments, the Committee voted to recommend the motion for Council approval and requested that the legislation be added to the Consent Agenda for the regular Council meeting on September 25.
