NEW ORLEANS, LA — A significant water main leak in the 1400 block of Killdeer Street resulted in continuous water flow and substantial erosion around a large tree, ultimately causing the tree to lean and creating a potential threat to nearby property and public safety.

Councilmember Eugene Green visited the site on multiple occasions and has been in direct communication with SWBNO regarding the urgency of the situation. SWBNO crews are actively working to stop the water flow, complete the necessary repairs, and address the conditions created by the leak.

"This is exactly the type of situation that requires an immediate response," said Councilmember Green. "When there is rushing water of this magnitude, every day matters. Continued water flow can undermine the surrounding ground, damage infrastructure and property, and create additional public safety concerns, as we have now seen with this tree."

Councilmember Green is requesting a report from SWBNO regarding its internal systems for receiving, identifying, escalating, and reporting serious water leaks and similar infrastructure emergencies. He is also calling for clearer procedures to ensure that significant reports involving rushing or continuously flowing water are addressed promptly and that the Council office and affected residents receive clear communication regarding the status of repairs and anticipated timelines.

Councilmember Green thanked SWBNO Executive Director Randy Hayman, who was personally on site today addressing the matter.

"I appreciate Executive Director Hayman for being on site and giving this situation his personal attention," Green said. "I look forward to working with him and the Sewerage and Water Board to make sure we have systems in place that allow serious issues like this to be identified and addressed before they escalate. Our residents deserve timely repairs."

The District D office will continue working with SWBNO until the water leak and related public safety concerns are fully addressed. A representative from our office is actively on the scene monitoring the situation, and we will remain engaged to ensure this matter is fully resolved and that the affected residents are made whole.
