Regional Transit Authority Board Approves Temporary Reinstatement of Inter-Parish Day Ride Program

"I am glad to finally see my efforts come to fruition and to ease this burden for our residents so that they may have increased access to jobs and opportunities that have been inaccessible for many years."

NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Board of Directors approved an initiative of Transportation Committee Chair and District "D" Councilmember Jared Brossett to further integrate and streamline transit routes in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. In September of 2016, Councilmember Brossett authored a resolution supporting the reinstatement of the Inter-Parish Day Ride Program to ease the burden on commuters who have been required to pay separate fares since the program was discontinued following Hurricane Katrina.

With this development, the RTA has agreed to a six-month trial period during which residents will have the ability to purchase a single pass for public transportation across parish lines. Under this pilot program, riders will be able to purchase tickets at $6 per day to ride any transit vehicle in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. The current rates are $4 per day for transit in Jefferson or $3 per day in New Orleans.

"I'm disappointed that it's taken the City this long to get to this point," said Councilmember Brossett. "Nevertheless, I am glad to finally see my efforts come to fruition and to ease this burden for our residents so that they may have increased access to jobs and opportunities that have been inaccessible for many years."

Over the course of the six-month trial period, City officials will collect data to inform their decision about the program's permanent implementation. As Transportation Committee Chair, Councilmember Brossett will continue to advocate on behalf of New Orleans commuters and ensure the City's transit system lives up to its name and responsibility as a regional provider.
