NEW ORLEANS - Today, Council Vice-President Helena Moreno filed a resolution in concert with one to be introduced by Jefferson Parish Councilmember Cynthia Lee Sheng promoting increased coordination between RTA, the Jefferson Parish Council, and the City of New Orleans on regional transit routes to more efficiently, and effectively, provide transit access for working people.
"First and foremost, our transit system must connect working people with job centers throughout the region in an efficient and integrated way," said Councilmember Moreno. "Too often, New Orleanians are forced to transfer multiple times and spend hours on transit to reach their place of employment, simply because our RTA does not currently make direct stops at regional job centers. For the sake of the working people of New Orleans, getting to regional job centers in and just outside of the parish line shouldn't take hours when direct routes could shave that time in half or more."
"We recognize that there are a lot of economic efficiencies for our transit system that can be achieved for both our parishes - while at the same time making the ride experience better for all of our passengers," said Councilmember Lee Sheng.
The resolution is a work in concert with a similar instrument to be introduced at the Jefferson Parish Council by Councilmember-At-Large Cynthia Lee Sheng and represents a cross-parish approach to making our local economies stronger while giving working people greater access to opportunity across the region.
The resolution will be heard at the Jefferson Parish Council Meeting on Wednesday, August 8th at 10 am. The meeting will take place in the General Government Building, 200 Derbigny Street, 2nd floor in Gretna. The New Orleans City Council Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 9th at 10 am in the Council Chamber, 1300 Perdido Street in New Orleans.
