City Council Directs City Planning Commission to Study Revitalization of Important Historic Canal Street Corridor

"Canal Street is our grand boulevard. Every citizen and every guest experiences Canal Street at some point. It has languished in disrepair for decades, and we must tend to it and restore it to its vitality and grandeur with deliberate haste."

NEW ORLEANS -  At today's regular meeting, Council President Jason Williams introduced and the Council unanimously approved M-18-200 directing the City Planning Commission (CPC) to engage in an in-depth study on initiatives to revitalize Canal Street. The study will present findings on why previous recommendations were not able to be implemented and will identify ways to incentivize the use of upper floors on buildings along Canal Street that have remained vacant for years. The motion also asks the CPC to examine whether encouraging the use of upper floors for short-term rental (STR) along the Canal corridor, between the Mississippi River and Claiborne Avenue, could spur revitalization of the area, specifically attracting more diverse and upscale retail on the bottom floors and also relieve the demand for STRs in residential neighborhoods.

Council President Jason Williams says, "Canal Street is our grand boulevard. Every citizen and every guest experiences Canal Street at some point. It has languished in disrepair for decades, and we must tend to it and restore it to its vitality and grandeur with deliberate haste."
