District "C" Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer Praises Changes to the City's Short Term Rental Program

NEW ORLEANS - At today's Special City Council meeting, Councilmembers approved changes spearheaded by Councilmember Palmer to the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance related to the City's Short Term Rental (STR) program. Zoning Docket 26/19 establishes two categories of STR permits: Residential and Commercial.

The three residential permit types, applicable in mixed-use and residential zones, all require a homestead exemption. Large scale residential permits are prohibited in certain residential districts and has block face restrictions. Commercial STR permits are only issued in mixed-use and commercially-zoned districts.

A separate Zoning Docket (ZD 27/19) bans STRs in the French Quarter and Garden District.

"Our neighborhoods are living, breathing embodiments of the culture and soul of this city. We cannot share the "New Orleans" experience with the world if we don't have the long term residents there to create it. Since taking office last May, my staff and I have been working to strengthen STR regulations to ensure neighborhoods come first. It's been a long year, but we are closer than we've ever been to striking a balance between a sustainable shared economy and preserving the fabric of our neighborhoods," said Councilmember Palmer.
