Councilmember Jared Brossett to Move Forward with Ordinance Mandating One-Time Suspension of Sanitation Fees

NEW ORLEANS - District “D” Councilmember Jared C. Brossett will seek to pass Ordinance 33,393, which mandates a one-time sanitation fee suspension, during tomorrow's regular Council meeting. This comes in the wake of Hurricane Ida, as many residents have gone an entire month without trash collection due to the storm.

While the hurricane exacerbated the problem, issues surrounding the City's trash collection had already become dire in the weeks prior. As a result, Councilmember Brossett held a joint Budget and Public Works Committee hearing earlier this summer to address inconsistent trash collection, mainly in service area 2.

“The waste collection issues we are experiencing are absolutely unacceptable. Not only is it a nuisance, but has also become a public health crisis,” said Councilmember Brossett. “I get countless calls daily with constituents reporting that they now have rats and maggots in and around their trash bins. We have met with Metro and the Administration to try to find a solution. This one-time fee suspension is what I can make happen right now to ensure New Orleanians do not have to pay for services they aren't receiving. While it won’t make the trash get collected faster, I believe it is a positive and long-overdue first step toward righting this wrong.”

Ordinance 33,393 will be voted on by the full Council during its meeting tomorrow, September 23, around approximately 12:30 PM. The meeting will begin at 10 AM in the Council Chambers and can be watched live at council.nola.gov.
