Councilmember Moreno Proposes "Pink Tax" Exemption for New Orleans, Lowering Prices on Diapers & Feminine Hygiene Products

NEW ORLEANS - Councilmember Helena Moreno has filed an ordinance to exempt diapers and feminine hygiene products from local sales taxes, lowering the costs for these essential items during the pandemic-induced economic downturn. Unlike many other essential health products that are available tax-free, feminine health products like tampons and diapers are not exempt from taxation, enacting an unnecessary premium on products mostly bought by women as a part of daily life.

Councilmember Moreno Advances Measure to Clean Up Abandoned Payphones in New Orleans Neighborhoods

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City Council Utilities Committee advanced a measure authored by Councilmember Helena Moreno to finally clean up blighted and abandoned payphones in our neighborhoods. A major payphone franchise holder allowed their franchise - or "right" to place their equipment on City property - to expire last September. Now, the Council is moving to direct the City to clean up this blight.

NEW ORLEANS - Councilmember-At-Large Helena Moreno has released the following statement in response to the upcoming removal of the bodies of Jose Ponce Arreola and Quinnyon Wimberly from the Hard Rock Hotel wreckage: 

"Today, as demolition at 1031 Canal continues, we learned that the bodies of 63-year-old Jose Ponce Arreola and 36-year-old Quinnyon Wimberly will soon be removed from the wreckage of 1301 Canal.
