NEW ORLEANS - Today, Council President Helena Moreno and Councilmember Joe Giarrusso announced the filing of a full renewal of the expiring 3.14 millage that supports the New Orleans Public Library (NOPL). The notice provides for a vote in the election held on October 9, 2021. The millage renewal, which extends the current millage for nineteen additional years, was first authorized in 1986. It is one of two millages that directly support the operations of the NOPL.

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the Council voted to appoint Donna Glapion, New Orleans civic and community leader, to serve as interim Councilmember At-Large for the remainder of former Councilmember Jason Williams’ term. 

NEW ORLEANS - The deadline for members of the public to apply for the vacant interim City Council seat is today, January 20, by 5 PM. The selected candidate will serve for the remainder of the term of former Councilmember At-Large Jason Williams, who is now officially sworn in as the City’s new District Attorney.

Qualified New Orleanians interested in taking on this role may visit council.nola.gov/interim to apply and submit a resume. As a reminder, anyone who serves as interim Councilmember At-Large may not run for that position in the Fall 2021 elections.

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the Council completed votes to deny the final four remaining tax exemptions requested by Folgers. Last month, the Council voted to deny two others, meaning all six requested are now rejected. The Orleans Parish School Board also voted against all six applications last month.

Moreno authored resolutions to deny all six applications to prioritize money going to public safety instead of a tax break to an $8B corporation.
